Genevieve Magazine highlights Natural Hair - April 2012

Remember we mentioned that Genevieve Magazine attended the last Naturals in the City 2? The write-up is in this month's edition along with some pictures. Pick up your copy now and check out our smiling and happy faces!

Yes o! The option to keep our hair natural and wear it in its natural state is getting more attention. Sometimes negatively (remember Sister Lady here?) and sometimes positively. Kudos to Genevieve Magazine for catching the vision and highlighting it.

Women are tired of the pain of the relaxers and its damaging effects. Although we still have a long way to go, keeping natural hair as is will soon be the norm - I believe that. Till then, here is to being natural and to a revolution that is not being televised.

Keep it natural!

Naturals in the City 2 was a Natural Success

All smiles because the event was so much fun!

It felt like we were among old friends. And I will be so bold to say that we were. There were many of us yelling "It is good to see you again!". And of course your usual tirade of questions and comments like: "Wow your hair has really grown" / "What did you use to get your curls so defined?" / "How long have you been growing your hair?" / "Why can't I get mine to look like that?"

Our Compere (I beg no call am MC!), Chigo, is a natural. All the presenters did a fantastic job: nutrition consultant Sherese Ijewere, "Hair Whisperer" Aislynn Adewale, and image consultant Ifeoma Williams.

Natmane of Deepbrown & Kinks did not disappoint with her styling tips. I thought I knew how to use hair pins until I saw Natmane in action. She also showed us different ways of wrapping / tying our hair. My styling session was fast and easy. I demonstrated how to do the Cinnabun bun. You can check out our "how to" blog post here.

I want to give a special shout out to the ladies from my BB Group African Tresses. They came out to meet-up and support and they all looked super fab. Yes o, they were the ladies in RED (black, grey and brown). Thank you ladies.

The baby had his little 'Baby Hawk' happening

Oh! Genevieve Magazine's Editor, Vanessa Banigo, was there to check out the event and interview the Organizers. Genevieve is published monthly in Nigeria, so make sure you keep checking to see the write-up and more pictures. Subscription is available for readers abroad. Contact them via their website.

Naturals in the City meet-up - The Flyer is here!

*Stumbling over* The Flyer is out! The Flyer is out! We have more details about the meet-up on March 10th. The excerpt below is courtesy of Screwy Haired Girl.

Naturals in the City 2
Saturday, March 10, 2012
1:30 - 5:30 p.m.
17, Maduike Street, off Raymond Njoku Street, off Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, Lagos

Exciting!

The excerpt below is courtesy of Screwy Haired Girl.

After the November meet-up, Natural Nigerian and I got a lot of questions about hair care, with most of them leading to one particularly frustrating topic: hair loss. This will therefore be the main theme of this March meet-up. Despite what we were taught as kids, our African hair is delicate; preventing the frustration of breaking hair is must-have knowledge for all black women who want fabulous hair.

There will be fantastic and well-respected professionals such as nutrition consultant Sherese Ijewere, "Hair Whisperer" Aislynn Adewale, esthetician Rita Aiyeniko, and image consultant Ifeoma Williams as speakers for the day, in addition to your blog girls Natural Nigerian, NatMane, Screwy Haired Girl, AND ME Omozo from O'Naturals either speaking or doing demos (see next highlight). The day's activities will be M.C.'d by the lovely and funny Chigo Otefe-Edebi.

There will be a how-to styling demonstration by ME! So please join us on Saturday March 10th.

Happy Anniversary Kinky Apothecary!

On Sunday December 18 2011, Kinky Apothecary celebrated their 18 month anniversary. It was great! The energy was super (or was it my energy?), the venue was cool, the champagne was bubbling and the cupcakes were yummy! The cupcakes had surprise cookies in them: how fabulous is that?! Everyone was happy to be there and I felt a sense of unity among the people in attendance.

The men who attended were supportive and we had a male speaker who came up to say why he prefers women who have natural/un-relaxed hair. Not sure how many ladies took his phone number *wink* but he got a thunderous applause when he was done!

One thing that caught my eye was the array of hair accessories worn by the ladies who came to the event. It showed boldness, creativity, versatility and ladies just having fun with their hair!

Hair Accessories Galore!

I'll post more pictures later.

Finally The Kinky Apothecary's Birthday Bash

We interviewed Nibi (read interview here), the founder of The Kinky Apothecary, and she hinted that they would be celebrating their birthday on December 18th. The time has come! Yaaaaay!!! You know it is going to be another natural hair meet-up in disguise. So for those who missed the meet-up organized in November here is another chance. The event is titled: Champagne, Cupcakes & Curltalk. Check out the invitation from Nibi:

Lagos Natural Hair Meet-Up was NAPPTASTIC!

Before I start I have to a give a loud applause to Natural Nigerian (NN), Screwyhair and Natmane. *Still clapping*

We were there!

Mommies and Babies
The Natural Hair meet-up took place yesterday, Nov. 19, 2011 from 1:30pm - 5:30pm at The Life House (33 Sinari Daranijo St., Victoria Island Lagos, Nigeria). There were definitely over a 100 people who attended. About 70 people signed the guest book. I kept looking around to see who was around. There was a time people were standing at the door because there were no more seats! It was cool. I asked NN if she expected so many people and she said "No".

Afros Galore
NN started the event by teaching us some really basic and foundational science of hair. There were so many things I did not know until yesterday. You can 'mechanically' close your hair cuticles by putting your hair in between your palms and kind of stroking your hair in a downward motion. Who knew?! Needless to say, I am better informed about my hair which means I should have healthier hair by the next meet-up. *fingers crossed*

Updos

Funky not Freaky Hairstyles

Then Screwyhair came up and spoke to us about various ingredients we can easily mix at home for our hair. Another eye-opener for me. You know those banana hair recipes? Well thanks to Screwyhair's experience *chuckling*, I need to ask for 'Ibo bananas' when I go to the market. I did not know that!

Makeovers too

Sherese Ijewere (our trained and practising resident nutrition consultant) informed us that healthy hair starts from within. Okay some of you are rolling your eyes and saying "Duh! I knew that." Well did you know that our Nigerian Abakaliki rice is mega nutritious? Yes no need to buy imported rice o! Contact Sherese (0806-875-4464) if you want more info on health and nutrition.

AFGMS Alumni representing!
Natmane came up and gave us major motivation! It was excellent. And after the pep talk, she educated us on good hair care practises and showed us how to do a style for work.

I met some of the bloggers I follow - online celebs. They were all so gracious and I met Nibi of The Kinky Apothecary (The first one-stop kinky hair shop in Lagos). And as you can imagine everyone was checking each other's hair out and asking questions about products, regimens and, styling. I went with Ibhaze (Friday's guest blogger) and she said I was like a kid in a candy store / play pen. I totally agree Ibhaze.

Bonus! Just had to take a shot - beautiful body art

If you are thinking that you should have been there: You are right. You should have been there!
